kalenas-logo-web-small-01KALENA’S a family run business, was founded by an ambitious Italian named Carmine and his young bride Isa. The newlyweds headed to Italy in 1967 which was to be their first buying trip, which incidentally doubled as their Honeymoon.

The Rio Theatre has been buttering popcorn since 1938, and in 2015 it’s one of the only remaining independently owned and operated theatres left in Vancouver. Conveniently located steps away from the Commercial Drive Skytrain station, this historic, art-deco “Grande Dame of The Drive” is the cultural anchor of East Vancouver, and was recently voted both Best Single Screen Theatre and Best Concession in The Georgia Straight and Best Arthouse Theatre in the Westender.
In 2012, the Rio was at the centre of a very public battle against the BC liquor board over policy that effectively banned movies at the venue after it received its liquor license. After several months of arduous back-and-forth with the government (that nearly put the theatre out of business), the community rallied with an overwhelming outpouring of support. The Rio managed to do the impossible and modernize BC liquor laws for movie lovers all over the province, cementing its position as, “the little theatre that could.” Friends of the popular venue rallied again in 2014 by contributing to a successful crowdsourcing campaign to restore the theatre’s historic neon sign to its former glory, thereby lighting up one of East Vancouver’s busiest hubs for all to enjoy.
The Rio’s eclectic mix of programming reflects the diversity of The Drive, and regularly includes everything from late night screenings of cult classics to Hollywood blockbusters, from live concerts with internationally acclaimed headliners to the hottest local burlesque and live comedy improv shows. The Rio Theatre has it all! Come see us some time.
